In 1914, Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company finished the construction of a dam and power station at the edge of Lake Margaret to supply their mine with water and electricity through a three kilometre long pipeline.
Almost 100 years later, in 2006, the station was closed, among other things, to refurbish the historic wooden pipeline, whose wooden staves, shown in the picture, had become very porous.

High quality, custom-made VAG valves regulate the supply of cooling water
When the nuclear power station Unterweser was connected to the grid in 1978, it was the largest in the world. Some 10,000 billion KWh of electricity is generated here every year by a pressurized water reactor. The nuclear reactor, also known as Esenshamm or Kleinensiel, takes up a prominent place among the 17 German nuclear reactors.

San Diego, the eighth largest city in the United States, is situated on the southern tip of California near the Mexican border. With the Pacific Ocean as its western border, this coastal city of 1.3 million is known as "surfers' paradise." It is also home to the largest naval fleet in the world and is one of the world's prominent wireless communication and biotech industrial hubs.
But nearly nine out of ten gallons of the county’s drinking water has to be imported from the far north of the state. The San Diego County Water Authority (SDCWA) provides safe and reliable water to the county of San Diego (approx three million inhabitants) through large-diameter water transmission pipelines, reservoirs and flow-control facilities. At its Escondido Crossover Pipeline Terminal Station, the Water Authority operated two plug valves to regulate flows in hundreds of miles of its transmission pipeline systems.

VAG valves supply water from the caves under the 'thousand hills'
Yogyakarta Special Province is one of the poorest areas of Java and Indonesia mainly because of the extreme lack of water. A dry season lasting several months and the craggy karst soil means that harvests are poor and drinking water scarce. In the 1980s, a ramified cave system with underground rivers was discovered 100 metres below the karst plateau. All that was needed was a sustainable way of exploiting the source.
A German-Indonesian cooperative was put in place in 2000. The goal of this interdisciplinary cooperation between researchers, scientists, corporations and institutes was to tap into and exploit the available water resource.

VAG designs special valves to protect the City of Bogen against floods
The 'Gate to the Bavarian Forest' is how the Lower Bavarian City of Bogen describes itself. The medieval city is situated on the banks of the Danube between Straubing and Vilshofen. With the growing risk of floods, the proximity to the river is becoming an increasing danger to the 10,000 inhabitants and their possessions. That is why RMD Wasserstraßen GmbH and the water board of Deggendorf developed a flood protection plan for the City of Bogen as part of the in-depth investigations into the regulation of the section of the Danube between Straubing and Vilshofen. The plan is to prevent flood water from the hinterlands reaching the city by storing it in retention basins and using pumps to channel it through the Bogen stream into the Danube.

VAG-Armaturen ensures remediated mine water is returned to the environment
The mining industry has a long tradition in the Czech Republic. Archaeological finds prove the search for precious metals started as early as the 13th century. Today, VAG ensures that mining has a minimal effect on the environment. Outdated technologies have been replaced with VAG valves, which guarantee that the applicable limit values are not exceeded after the mine water has been remediated. Every year, 2.5 million cubic metres of the highest quality water are remediated, making it safe for the environment and for human consumption. With its integral approach to quality and excellent service, Jihomoravská Armaturka, a manufacturing and sales company within the VAG group, came out ahead of the clearly cheaper competition.

In Koszalin, water is referred to as the city’s biggest treasure. And so it is not surprising that handling this precious resource has had a long tradition in the Polish city. As early as in the 18th century, people began to develop and install a professional water supply system in the city then called Köslin and belonging to Prussia. At the end of the 19th century, the wooden water pipelines were replaced by pipes made of cast iron, and this as the birth of the city’s first modern water supply system.
The renovation of household water supply systems all over Poland, which was completed by the beginning of the 20th century, was partly effected using VAG valves (formerly called Bopp & Reuther). Gate valves, standpost and underground hydrants, house connections, even entire water supply systems were exported from Mannheim, Germany to Poland and to other countries.

The exploration of renewable energies points the way to the environmentally sound generation of power in the 21st century. Biogas plants using renewable raw materials as green resources are a key technology in this respect. They are climate neutral, make use of agricultural products among others and thus have a perfect ecobalance. VAG valves help to accurately control the plants’ complex industrial process equipment and to make them even more efficient through automation. One example can be found in Tecklenburg at the foot of the Teutoburg Forest in Germany. Since January 2007, the Tecklenburg biogas plant has been operating there, using pneumatically actuated valves made in Mannheim, Germany.

Algeria is situated between the Atlas Mountains in the north and the Sahara desert in the south. Most of the country’s water is supplied from dams. The dams are run by the government, while the pipelines and purification plants are run by the municipalities. The amount of water supplied from the reservoirs did not always match the amount received by the municipalities. This metering and documentation problem was solved by VAG valves: a 2 million Euro project that is yet to be equalled in type, size and cost.
